Sometimes they still broadcast some of those b/w movies that tell of brave American soldiers who fought against violent and savage natives: this is because, simply, yet in recent times it was usual cultural heritage of the winner “pale face” that discredited the defeated enemy. In a nutshell, when the Europeans came into contact with the new continent, already populated everywhere, they acted exactly as in their homelands, overpowering the weak (Native Americans), relegating them to the sidelines, depriving them of resources, habitats and in the end, after having exterminated countless, confining them in reserves.
We do not reflect enough on the meaning and purpose of the words: define the European colonization of the American continent as a “conquest” makes it a fascinating fact, noble, evocative of values and progress, while calling it “invasion” would deprive the myth, changing it in deplorable page of human history.
